Products containing saw palmetto are said to have the ability to solve problems with hair loss. Experts are yet unable to specify the method of action used by saw palmetto for blocking hair loss.
Its scientific name is serenoa repens and it is native to North America. A dwarf palm plant, saw palmetto was originally used for treating breast disorders in women and urinary conditions in men by Native Americans. As with traditional medicine, saw palmetto has become a widely-accepted ingredient for medications that treat benign prostate gland enlargement in Europe but it is still considered an herbal remedy in North America.
Recently, saw palmetto has begun enjoying popularity as a remedy for hair loss, specifically male and female-patterned baldness or androgenic alopecia. This kind of baldness mostly affects the top area of the scalp. Saw palmetto is believed to contain certain elements that block or at least reduce effects of testosterones assumed to be the cause of hair loss. Nevertheless, the efficacy of saw palmetto on hair loss still lacks scientific proof.
People intent on using saw palmetto hair loss should be aware that, like any herbal supplement or remedy, saw palmetto also comes with possible side effects. This includes but is not limited to mild stomach ache, bad breath, and diarrhea. Although people have yet to establish a clear link between these effects and the use of saw palmetto, people are advised to consult their doctor before using saw palmetto for hair loss.
