Saw Palmetto Products

It is quite ironic that while saw palmetto, a dwarf palm, is native to North America, its medicinal use is accepted in Europe and some parts of New Zealand but not in its homeland. As far as the United States is concerned, use of saw palmetto still qualifies it only as a herbal remedy or supplement.

Saw palmetto’s scientific name is Serenoa repens and its oil is purported to contain medicinally active ingredients. Saw palmetto products are best known for treating prostate enlargement or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as well as various urinary problems. In recent times, saw palmetto products have extended its purpose towards treating hair loss.
As with any other herbal supplement, saw palmetto products are not without potential side effects. There are quite a number of cases in which people have reported suffering from muscle pain and stomach problems. A few had reported suffering from heart problems and depression, but none of these had been satisfactorily linked yet to use of saw palmetto products.

It is also believed that saw palmetto products may affect levels of testosterone and estrogen. Although this is not for certain, it is still considered best to avoid use of saw palmetto products if you are suffering from any hormone-sensitive disorder. There are other kinds of individuals that face the same risks with the use of saw palmetto products, including but not limited to children, pregnant women, and people with bleeding disorders or liver problems.

If you wish to make use of any saw palmetto product, play it safe and consult your doctor prior to taking anything.
